RockSteady 4.0: A New Standard
DJI's RockSteady 4.0 stabilization is, without exaggeration, the best electronic image stabilization I've tested on any action camera. Running at 4K60 with RockSteady enabled, footage shot while running on rough terrain is essentially indistinguishable from gimbal-stabilized footage at a casual glance. The new algorithm anticipates motion rather than just reacting to it, resulting in smoother transitions between movements.
In direct comparison with the GoPro Hero 13 Black's HyperSmooth 6.0, the Osmo Action 5 Pro produces footage with less artificial 'smoothing' artifacts and more natural-looking camera motion โ a significant visual quality advantage.
Video Quality: 4K120 is Spectacular
The 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor captures 4K video at up to 120fps โ the smoothest slow motion available in a sub-$300 action camera. The larger sensor translates to dramatically better low-light performance; footage shot at dusk retains color and detail where the GoPro Hero 13 shows visible noise.
The 10-bit D-Log M color profile provides exceptional dynamic range for post-production work โ highlights and shadows both retain detail that other action cameras clip. For content creators who color-grade footage, this alone is a decisive advantage.
Battery Life: Game Changer
The 1,950 mAh battery provides approximately 4 hours of continuous 4K30 recording โ roughly double what the GoPro Hero 13 delivers. In adventure use, this is genuinely transformative: I shot an entire day of skiing in Japan without needing to swap batteries, something completely impossible with GoPro.
The magnetic charging port also doubles as a data transfer port and allows the camera to record while charging via a power bank โ essential for ultra-long sessions.
Durability Testing
DJI rates the Action 5 Pro as waterproof to 20 meters without a housing โ deeper than the GoPro Hero 13's 10 meters. In our testing, the camera performed flawlessly submerged to 12 meters in the ocean and handled direct high-pressure water jets without any ingress.
Freeze testing at -20ยฐC (simulating alpine conditions) showed no degradation in performance โ the battery retained full capacity and the touchscreen remained responsive with gloves. This matches and in some cases exceeds GoPro's cold-weather performance.
