Active Noise Cancellation
Sony's new QN3 processor delivers ANC that is, without question, the best available in a consumer headphone. In our standardized testing โ a 78dB broadband noise environment โ the XM6 attenuated noise to an average of 8dB perceived. For comparison, the Bose QC Ultra measured 11dB and AirPods Max 13dB in the same test.
In real-world commuting, the XM6 makes a busy metro train essentially silent. The new 'Precise Voice Pickup' mode simultaneously silences background noise while keeping your voice crystal clear on calls โ the best implementation of call ANC I've tested.
Sound Quality
Sony has fine-tuned the XM6's sound signature toward a more neutral balance compared to the bass-heavy XM5. The result is a more versatile headphone โ jazz, classical, and podcasts now sound as natural as EDM and hip-hop. LDAC wireless codec support means Hi-Res Audio files stream at up to 990kbps โ audiophile-grade wireless quality.
The 30mm dynamic drivers deliver excellent detail retrieval and a convincingly wide soundstage for closed-back headphones. The only criticism is a slight upper-midrange dip that can make vocals sound slightly recessed at high volumes.
Comfort & Design
At 254g, the XM6 is 12g lighter than the XM5, and the redesigned ear cushions use a new memory foam that distributes pressure more evenly. In my personal testing, I wore them for an 8-hour work day without discomfort โ a genuine achievement for over-ear headphones.
The plastic build is the one area where the $399 price tag stings slightly. Bose and Apple both use more premium materials, and it shows in hand. However, the benefit is that the XM6 remains lighter and more flexible than its metal competitors.
Battery & Features
Sony claims 30 hours with ANC on โ in our standardized testing at moderate volume, we measured 31.5 hours. Quick Charge gives 3 hours of playback from a 3-minute charge. The companion app (Android/iOS) offers extensive EQ customization, ANC adjustment, and the useful Speak-to-Chat automatic pause feature.
Multipoint connection allows seamless switching between two devices โ essential for modern workflows between phone and laptop.
